Speaking of rivers

I just cannot wrap my head around this type of rowing - sitting backwards. It makes no sense to me to not be able to see where you're going without having to turn around. Plus, if I'm seeing it correctly (in my head), the strokes are backwards, too! I get that this is a type of rowing...I just don't get why.
