It was a fine day for a walk

The choice of where we walked might puzzle some people, but Hollenback Cemetery is a treasure trove of history and some really cool architecture. Walking through, one sees lots of recognizable names from Wilkes-Barre's past: Kirby, Stegmaier, Conyngham, Butler, Osterhout, Fell...for a history buff, this is a place one could spend hours.

I am not a history buff. I enjoy the mausoleums and gravestones. There's a great variety and it's interesting to see the "trends" through the years. "So & So, born 01/01/1789 in Lancaster County, died 01/01/1853 in Great Bend, Ill", "So & So, born  01/01/1789, died 01/01/1853 in his 64th year of life", etc.
And gravestones now are pretty sleek and kind of boring. They haven't always been that way, though! Through the years, there have been some very ornate things going on!

I'm sure some people find our choice morbid, but it is a little more educational than walking the dike - I love the river, but a change of scenery is good sometimes. Plus, Hollenback has some monster hills - cardio!
